Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand
February 20-August 22, 2010
This first solo museum survey of Shepard Fairey's work coincides with the 20th anniversary of his dynamic career. Fairey is an artist who has had a major impact on people in communities across the nation, bringing people together in ways very few others have been able to do. Responsible for the iconic image of Barack Obama's presidential campaign, Obama HOPE, and named this year's official Grammy artist, Fairey has developed into one of the most influential street artists of our time. Despite breaking many of the spoken and unspoken rules of contemporary art and culture, his work is featured in museums and galleries, as well as high-profile commercial endeavors. The museum show includes external sites throughout the region, enabling the community's direct participation with the artist.
Shilpa Gupta: A Bit Closer
February 20-May 2, 2010
Shilpa Gupta is emerging as one of the most important female artists living and working in India today, and the Contemporary Arts Center is the site of her first solo museum show. By using work that relies on interaction as well as work that provokes thoughtful examination, her exhibition aims to provide the people of Greater Cincinnati with a contemplative space where they can connect with global concerns together, in a more personal way.
Marilyn Minter: Chewing Color
through May 2, 2010
This marks Marilyn Minter's debut solo museum show. Minter is a highly sought after artist in the commercial world of international fashion, beauty, and publishing. The exhibition features the luminous enamel paintings and lush color photographs for which she is so well known. These saturated, slick and glossy works reveal the sometimes flawed side of glamour, focusing sharply on a detail or moment of imperfection. Included in the show is Green Pink Caviar, the video that gained fame playing on the MTV HD billboard in Times Square and, most recently, accompanying Madonna on her European tour. A shorter version of the video also plays intermittently on the giant video screen on Fountain Square, making Cincinnati the only location outside Times Square in New York and Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles to offer this for the public.
